Sarah Pettygoose of the First Nation People of Ontario, Canada is sending a specially made fox sculpture for us. The First Nation people have put it through their ceremonies so that it can carry strength and protection for the hunted foxes of England – it will soon be on its way here.

Ms. Ward:
I am writing you on the behalf of Walpole Island First Nation People of Ontario Reservation. We had the gift of viewing your film on the plight of the Red Foxes Of England. We, would like to extend our support. After our discussion of this film, we would like to say that this is not hunting. We, The First Nation People of Canada, are by tradition, hunters. We ache for the plight of Red Fox whose existence is compromised by those who cannot see that we and all creatures of earth are of the same root. A strong love and veneration of nature has led us and for you, an appreciation of the Red Foxes. These acts of violence and destruction do not fit into any of our own cultural contexts, and confronts our preconceptions about what these people call hunting. We are by tradition hunters and gatherers. The animals and nature provides us with the gift of reciprocal life. to take an animal in such a heinous way goes against being in truthful light, rather it strikes a reality, an almost deathly stillness of reality, for those who desire to turn away from the path of good life in this world. Sarah Pettygoose”

We are nearly at the end of another cub-hunting season and the hunts have been seen out there doing it … the sabs are out there trying to stop them … the monitors are out there trying to film them. And Minority Pastime is setting out to bring this information to the bigger public. David Cameron is sitting tight on repeal of the Ban, but he will not be allowed not to try for it even though it will sit ill with the public, along with all the other deeply unfair and unpopular policies his government is instigating. With articles in the press increasingly flaunting hunting as usual with the Ban in place we need to bring our news to the nation.

Two descriptions today of the Tedworth Hunt. One is in the article by Robert McCrum in The Observer and the other given to me by a sab who sabbed them yesterday. Using a day out with Tedworth as his platform McCrum vaunts in colourful detail the pleasures of hunting which include apparently spontaneous sex in trailers stimulated by this high risk (to the fox) recreation. Unpleasantly, this reminds me of the rapes carried out by pillaging soldiers high on violence. In fact this long and profoundly sickening description has poisoned my day. Perhaps it is the well-prosed renditions of the beauties of the landscape and of nature juxtaposed with sex and violence all in the wonderful and magical early morning light. I can’t get it out of my mind today, and today is a beautiful day that should make you forget all but its beauty. That is the infection of the hunting horror. It gives you pictures you cannot erase. McCrum says he is in an Alice in Wonderland world because he is out hunting but the fox is never mentioned.Too right. He says they admit they are cubhunting but are ‘evasive’ about what they are actually doing. The picture of these people carefuly making word play the distinction between right and wrong is deeply unerving.
Compare this well-written and articulate prose, written by an ex-public school Cambridge graduate son of an old Etonian, with the description of the sab of his day out with the same hunt. He is pleased because by getting up at an ungodly hour, travelling miles following the hunt from the kennels, the sabs managed to prevent hunting being carried out. The hunt proceeded to put the young hounds in many covers and along hedges to find foxes and the hounds went on cry twice, meaning they had found a fox, but as these brave hunterfolk are not brave enough to ‘do it’ in front of witnesses, the hunt kept moving on and eventually went home early. In the course of their activities, as the sab observed, they disturbed many forms of wildlife, including hares and roe deer that fled the hunt in terror, and birds disrupted from the hedgerows.

Our film, Minority Pastime, asks David Cameron why he wants to make hunting legal again.

Whilst the Conservative Party remain committed to repealing the Hunting Act 2004, re-legalising hunting wild mammals with dogs and condoning – if not championing – cruelty as a ‘sport, the official response to questioning this intention is to say that there are more important issues to deal with. We agree. But all the same we believe that if the Tories had won an outright majority the free vote on repeal would have been one of the first things on their agenda.

With the LibDems support we now have the Conservative government that nobody voted for and, arguably, most people voted against. Initial polls are showing support for the austerity budget, increasing support for Tories and relegation of the LibDems to a poor 3rd place. <a href="http://ukpollingreport.co.uk/blog/" target=blank">YouGov’s post-budget poll for the Sun shows a broadly positive reception.

The polling seems to show that a majority think the budget is ‘fair’ but what it doesn’t ask is ‘do you care about the disadvantaged and vulnerable who will be the first to pay the price for Conservative Social Engineering?’ or ‘What do you think is a fair price to pay to keep the better off better off?’

We already know that the lives of defenceless wild animals are dispensable in the pursuit of an archaic ‘sport’, it really is not that big a step to say that the wellbeing of millions of UK citizens is dispensable in the pursuit of an archaic ideology.

<a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2010/jun/24/george-osborne-pension-welfare-disability-cuts?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter" target=blank">George Osborne hints at further cuts in welfare budget – the Guardian
Cameron said he would like to see further welfare cuts. “We want to do everything that we can to keep police officers on the streets, to have money going into our schools and to keep up spending on our hospitals, and the only way that we are going to be able to do it is if we deal with the problems of excessive welfare spending.

<a href="http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/the-age-of-austerity-is-only-just-beginning-2008896.html" target=blank">The age of austerity is only just beginning – the Independent
Unprecedented sums must be found, and “very deep cuts” made to services hitherto taken for granted. All the indications are that universities will face some of the toughest discipline, raising the possibility of the merger or closure of some institutions.

<a href="http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/tories-seek-further-cuts-as-public-sector-staff-get-pensions-warning-2008891.html" target=blank">Tories seek further cuts as public sector staff get pensions warning – the Independent
No decisions have been taken, but this could mean curbs on winter fuel allowances, free bus passes and television licences for better-off pensioners – even though the Tories promised not to cut them at last month’s election.

Budget is not progressive, declares IFS
Though the IFS did not say so in stark terms, a rise in homelessness seems an inevitable consequence of the Budget, one of the more painful and graphic ways that society will become less equal in coming years.

The ConDem budget has reaffirmed two things – the Lib Dems are not to be trusted and Tories don’t care about anything or anyone outside their own constituency. Minority Pastime has always felt that the Conservative’s committment to Repeal of the Hunting Act is about ‘Power’. Widespread and determined cruelty is the res…ult, but this is just collateral damage – they just don’t care about foxes one way or the other. Just as they don’t care about the more vulnerable and disadvantaged members of our communities. Thatcher showed this – and indeed articulated it on at least one occasion. Throughout our campaign we have found numerous political comparisons and links to Hunting. This Guardian editorial is a prime example – the Lib Dems have now been ‘blooded’ like unsuspecting children at their first ‘kill’. It will not be long before, to quote Ewan McLennan’s song, “The blood of the sport stains their hands” as well.

With less than 2 weeks to the election Minority Pastime is slowly making its mark. Our main aim was always to put this issue on the agenda for public debate. It’s bubbling just under the surface now and where the mainstream media have covered it they have shown some understanding of, and quite a lot of respect for, the cause and its champions. Along with many others, we think we are helping to inform that understanding. There are many groups and organisations pushing – Bryan May’s Save-Me is having an enormous impact and ‘Conservatives Against Fox-Hunting’ deserve admiration for their determination. In fact I do think they somehow epitomise the reason and need for this campaign. Their recognition of the damage that the pledge to repeal will do to their Party is fundamental – and the responses we have seen from the Conservative PPCs etc. show, at best, a misguided loyalty to the leadership and, more generally, outright disdain for the majority of ‘decent’ Conservative voters. As we have heard many times – ‘The Hunters will do anything to make sure they can carry on doing what they want to do’. And Cameron and Herbert appear to be determined to do anything and everything they can to support their cause.

Thanks to all our members for your support. Let’s keep the pressure on.

Looking out over a beautiful stretch of the Dorset countryside… and wondering, where are they now?… peering into the hills for a tell-tale glimpse or moving figures on horseback, or hounds spreading over a field. That you know they are there, doing what they are doing, changes everything, even when you can’t see them. Eerily, out of sight, out of sound, they are relentlessly seeking a small wild animal. That hard-faced, uniformed group that had convened in a field on horseback, with a pack of dogs that poured past us out into the lane, are concealed in the folds of landscape trying, with great, determined and concentrated intent, to bring destruction on a life. This does not appear in the tourist brochures.

Last week the Warwickshire hunt invaded private land dedicated to wildlife and conservation…where foxes live. What will be the effect on the foxes? Will they leave their safe place? The hunt Master says ‘we endeavour to hunt with the permission of the landowner…I am not being flippant when I say I am genuinely sorry he is upset‘. He does not say he is sorry that it happened, only that he is sorry someone is upset. Like the hunt personnel who came to my village, he does not seem to have any conception of what it means to people to have their homes and land invaded by an out of control pack of dogs trying to find and kill wildlife which is nurtured and respected by the people who live there. Like the hunt that came to my village, he cannot do more than endeavour – in their case it was try – not to invade private land. Where is the ‘I will make absolutely sure this will never happen again’? Why should people be endlessly exposed to this risk because they live in an area where these other people want to carry out their bloodthirsty pastime?
